I have a beautiful Silver Spangled Hamburg who chose the garden shed to hoard 3 eggs and set on them. Because she had always been flighty, I left her alone
and never candled the eggs. Well, yesterday was day 22 and I could detect an odor from the nest when I caught her off it. I candled, handling like dynamite!,
and not one was good. I thought about giving her other eggs but would it be fair to sentence her to another 3 weeks on the nest? So, instead, I shut the door

They hatched yesterday and I put them under my broody cuckoo maran early, early this morning way before daylight. When I checked on them at 8 a.m., she is
still sitting on the nest with all these little tiny heads popping out. She seems happy and so do they. And my DH is super happy that I'm not going to
try incubating any more...

Sexing baby chicks is not an easy process. There are a few who would try to simplify the matter with "old wives' tales" of how to sex baby
chicks. One method often repeated is tying a weight to the end of a piece of string and hold it over the young animal. One interpretation of this method says
that if the object swings back and forth it is a male; if it rotates in a circle, it is a female.

Hi,

I'm new to the forum and I'd like to hear other opinions on washing eggs. We've got a small flock and not all hens use the nest boxes, so some of
the eggs get dirty. The ones that are too soiled we just give to the dogs. A few spots I usually wipe off with a damp rag. But we've got a friend who
scrubs and rinses all her eggs and then sells them to the general public. We've got a book that says not to do that because supposedly the dirt just gets
deeper...
