I have never seen crook neck in my lesser quality 'hatchery' silkies. (of course, they have other issues, like throwing babies with fewer toes, and single combs :-) It was the expensive SQ ones I got, and i think it was partially genetics and partially the feeding. I didn't know about always feeding them 20% protein, but based on the fact that I generally have babies all through the year, and it is difficult to separate everyone's feed, that the adults rarely get 16% anyway, unless i run out of starter/grower. (they hate the pellets, and the only crumble i get is starter or starter/grower) However, once i started feeding the babies the VE powder in their water until they were about 3-4 months old, i haven't seen it at all. I have also had two roos die off this past year, so if they were the genetic culprits, that might explain it also. I am reluctant to discontinue the VE though, just in case.
