what about this? |

I want to let my hens 'free range' a bit, but still make sure they return to the coop at night. We occasionally have loose dogs, and my barn
'kittens' are becoming monster-sized cats, fantastic hunters, and totally fascinated with the chickens, so letting the hens run loose is not an option.
I was thinking i could make a low covered pen, maybe with pvc and chicken wire, covered with the flight netting. To get the hens into the pen from their run, i
was thinking maybe something like a dog agility tunnel - i could move the pen around, and the tunnel can expand or contract as needed. If i wanted to go
farther, and it works out okay, i could always add a second tunnel to the length (trying to figure out if i can make a tunnel, b/c a regular agility tunnel is
nylon fabric, not terribly durable, and it a little wider circumference-wise than i need.

Chicken wire is not a deterrant to most predators, and I don't think the agility tunnels would stop them either. Have you checked out some of the chicken tractors in this forum ? There are lots of good ideas for movable pens.

I did look at the chicken tractors, but i was thinking of something more like the hamster 'habitrails' so they could come into the grassy area, and then return to their run/coop easily. If a predator showed up, they could return to their main pen. If i did a chicken tractor, i'd have to convince some of them to go in it in the morning, move it, and move it back at night. Also i read that layer production is really poor with the chicken tractors, that it is made for broilers. |

I like your idea, but it just needs to be made of something stronger... A lot of people use chicken tractors to move birds from place to place and it is not strictly for broilers. For some, it is the only coop they have.
