I wish everyone would neuter their animals! |

A neighbor's intact tom cat has been coming down the road to our farm, looking for a girlfriend. Since all our cats are spayed, he gets nothing. He is a
big, friendly cat, I've petted him before. I was doing chores and heard a cat fight break out, there was Big Joe attacking our sweet little Lady Porky. I
yelled and Big Joe ran off. So I decided to take Big Joe back home, coaxed him to me, picked him up by the scruff of his neck, holding his back legs. I had to
let go of his legs to open the car door and he went berserk, flipped around and sunk his teeth in my wrist and wouldn't let go. I don't know when
I've felt such pain, he continued to bite, scratch and hiss. He finally let go but all I could do was hold my wrist and cry, trying to stop the blood. I
finally made it to the house to wash and soak my numerous wounds, my wrist is terrible, swollen and black and blue. I'll have to go to the doctor tomorrow
for antibiotics, cat bites are the worse. And Big Joe now has a contract out on his head, he is not allowed to come here and beat up our innocent cats, I was
trying to do him a favor. If he would have only been neutered, he would have stayed at his own home instead of roaming the countryside. Julie

I am so sorry for your hurt ego. However, anyone that would grab a cat by the scruff of the neck and carry him by the hindquarters and is not intending to
either drop him into a vat of hot oil or a gunny sack is asking for it. I am serious. This is what happens when humans put human personalities into animals.
This cat did what it did because it was scared, frightened, or in the least put into a situation where his life was perceived to be in danger. It did not
purposely hurt you because it felt like it wanted to.
You need to see a doctor. Infection will likely set in fast and this needs to be looked at immediately. Please, please do not take this as me being mean either. Think next time when you are dealing with animals. Animals work on a level of instinct and nature that humans have far removed themselves from. It is difficult to understand why some cat would come bullying your cats, but remember this is what cats have been doing to one another since the dawn of cats. It is a good thing to get cats neutered and spayed, but even if the cat was neutered and was in a "fight or flight" situation the results would be the same. In some respects you are very lucky. This is not a time of vendetta. This is not a time to hurt something just because you were hurt. It is a time to be wiser than the soul and go to a clinic for treatment and then respectfully pay a visit to the cat's owner. It is hardly a cats fault for being a cat, but a responsible owner needs to be addressed and a responsible victim needs to understand why it happened. Please be careful, and do not put off seeing a physician over this. I am serious. Sincerely, Ron |

My spayed female cat would do the same exact thing to me if I picked her up and tried to get her into the car! My spayed female cat also bullies and attacks my
2 huge german shepherds. Cats are cats.

BTDT, well not exactly but almost. I got it in the face. I went to the ER, should have saved myself the time.
Anyway, to get to the point. Watch out for blood poisoning, I am sure you know the signs. Red lines going from the wound. I would soak my hand/arm with Epsom Salt just as a precaution. Maybe you scared him enough that he won't be back. We had a tomcat problem hanging around here, I thought he had left the country or became coyote bait. But I think I saw him a couple of days ago. |

My toddler got Cat Scratch Fever...really! It does exist in more than just a Ted Nugent song! It was horrible and took several doctors to figure out what was
wrong! Rare but it happens!

I wish people would keep their cats indoors. Feral cats are the worse and ones running around the neighborhood, pets or not, are a major nuisance especially
when you raise wild species of birds.

I just got home from Dr., antibiotics, heat and watch closely for the next few days, go back tomorrow to have it checked. It's not my ego that is hurt,
I'm really sore today. My point of the whole thing is, neutered pets don't usually run around the countryside. They are content to stay home. Yes, we
have cat fights break out around here at times but they are usually minor and shortlived. Big Joe launched a vicious attack on our little black female and, as
much as I love cats, I won't put up with that. He hasn't got a contract out on him because I'm angry, it's because no one will take
responsibilty for him. The neighbor said this cat just moved onto his place from somewhere else. I don't put human emotions on animals, I've handled
lots of cats the way I had him. Holding the scruff of his neck controlled his head with his body tucked under my arm and holding his back legs, you can pretty
much control him. My mistake was letting go of his legs while opening the car door. Yes, it was a dumb thing to do but I've petted him before and he seemed
to be a big old marshmallow. I thought I was doing him a favor. My mistake, big time. Julie

I have to agree with Jody + Julie . I love cats and hate most cat owners- It is the only animal allowed to run at will with no regard to the safety of the
animal or the idea not everyone likes "OPP" Other Peoples Pets - I have seen that cat hold and it is perfectly acceptable - and much kinder then when
they get in my traps and are hauled off to the pound where in 3 days they are put down - my pets do not go calling so why anyone would think it is ok to put an
animal outside to roam is beyond me.

So sorry for your pain. OUCH!!!!
In such situations I take the cat (this type of fellow might have to be hav-a-hart trapped to catch him), get him neutered (Friends of Animals certificates are one low cost program), and release him back where I found him - if he had a home - and find a home for him if he were homeless. Once neutered, he'll likely be calmer and he won't be breeding. Some humans are just going to be irresponsible and not spay/neuter when of course they should, so I do it. In the time it would take to change the behavior of an ignoramous human, an un-fixed cat can make a gazillion more homeless cats. Boy cats just need to sleep off the anesthesia for a night in the carrier and then they can resume activity. Girls need a good few days to recover...... I happen to agree that neutered pets are more likely to stay around their home... |

I always think it's amazing that I've never been bitten by an animal, even after working for a year at a vet's office and two years at a bird
sanctuary. The lady I work for is ALWAYS getting bit by the birds and they make her bleed! I've been nipped a few times, but either I'm fast enough to
get away or the animals just like me LOL.
I hear cat bites are the worst though. I've been scratched and just THAT hurt like heck. I have to agree with you though, people who do not spay or neuter their PETS just annoy me to no end! Now people who breed for show/work/performance are another thing, but I just hate when people buy an animal and completely abandon their responsibilities. The first thing I think of when considering a new pet is whether or not I will have enough money to get them spayed or neutered! There are already too many unwanted pets out there, I just don't see why we need more! (Also, tom cats STINK! I don't know how anyone could stand that smell! LOL) I hope your arm feels better!

sorry too, but in defense of feral cats... | #11 | ||

Here in Anguilla we have lots of feral cats. Our animal organization does try to help with a spaying program to help with the expenses, we only have 1 vet
here. I look after a feral cat, feed her, talk to her and pet her. It took months to gain her confidence to allow being petted, she will even come inside, lay
in the kitchen and likes affection. I try to live my life being kind to all creatures. This cat did have a male mate that we fed both of them. We called them
the loving couple, they were always together and very affectionate with each other. One day he disappeared never to be seen again, and she was very lonely
after that. We call her the widow now. As to smelly males, alot of male animals have strong scents, a male goat smells but the female does not. I really am
sorry you got bit, the wrist is a very sensitive area. I hope you can find it in your heart to forgive him, his reaction was one of fear and self preservation.

I have had a change of heart, I talked to the neighbor and he is going to lock up Big Joe for the required 14 days and then we are getting him neutered. My
husband has cut several tom cats that came to our house to live, I get knock out pills at the vet and it works well, he always cut our baby pigs when we raised
hogs. After they come out of it, you'd never know anything happened. So hopefully it will change Big Joes attitude towards fighting, we had one stray tom
that it did not, he was still just as mean so he was eliminated when I saw him attack a mother cat carrying a kitten.
Feathered, I remember the pictures you posted of your loving couple and how distraught she was when he disappeared. Animals form attachments and grieve just as we humans and we need to respect that. The saddest thing I ever saw here on the farm was when a heifer, first time mother, had a hard birth, had to have the vet out and the calf was born dead. It was late at night so we left her in the barn with the calf and went home. When I went to the barn the next day, I could hear her. She had the calf all cleaned up, was laying with the calf in front of her and she was shrieking over and over, it brought tears to me eyes. She was mourning her little dead baby. Julie On a side note, I went back to the Dr yesterday, the wrist was quite red and very, very sore. The PA that I was seeing, talked to the DR in the clinic and she said to soak it in half and half vinegar water. You would not believe how it took the redness and soreness out! I guess the acid in the vinegar does something, but then no one should be surprised, so many of you give it to your chickens in their water. But make a note for if you are ever in this situation.

Sorry to hear about your awful experience with the cat, Julie. Good to know about the vinegar water, though. I hope when you do the layman's neuter on that
cat, it does the trick.

My female cat was a stray that was dropped off at my house when she was just a kitten. I found her in my chicken pen, she was covered in fleas. I took her in
and cleaned her up and fed her. When she was old enough I had her fixed. Whoever dropped her off will never know what a great cat they got rid of. She never
bothers my chickens and while she may swing at the grandkids when they pester her, she never uses her claws when she does it. She plays chase outside with my
dog, she will run by him and get him to chase her and then run up a tree when he gets close. She is a wonderful addition to our family. I am a cat owner but I
do the right thing when it comes to all my pets. We do have a problem with dog owners in this neighborhood, they think they can get a dog and just let it run
free because they are in the country, that is what is irresponsible to me. They come onto my property and try to harm my animals that are trainned to never
leave our property and that just makes me so mad.
Who I am is who I want to be, I'm a survivor.
