This is such a bummer. Hopefully it won't hurt them.
I have several tarps over the front porch of the coop. We've had several really bad wind storms, and it has shredded some of the tarp. Amazingly, the shreds are making their way through the 1/2" hardware cloth all around the run. The girls ignored it for awhile, but I recently saw some eating it. Fortunately, the short strands are pretty friable. I'm hoping they'll be easily broken up in their gizzards. There's just too much of the shreds of tarp for me to pick up. Plus, I'm having a health issue where I need to avoid leaning over.
They seem to be making tarps cheaper and cheaper. They can hardly last 1 year outside.
