Posts: 133 01/09/09 05:31 PM	I have my hen house inside of a 4 foot by 8 foot dog run with paver stones for steps and also for raccoon barriers around the edges. The last week I've had some mice move in and dig holes under the paver stone steps inside. I'm sure they are thrilled with the "All you can eat" buffet left by my hens, but I'm not thrilled with their living in the coop. But here's the issue: When we had mice before they were near the house and we successfully used mouse traps to kill all of them. We were even able to use some poison because they were FAR away from my hens. This new mouse colony is right under their noses and that rules out poison and traps. What else can I do to kill them? Posts: 770 01/09/09 06:38 PM	find the holes where they enter and leave from .... poke some rat poison into those holes with a long stick - making sure chicks cant get into those holes.... or keep flooding holes with water from the hose - imagine trying to live in wet holes? keep a look out for mice droppings until they disappear with your efforts doing those above. then when totally gone block those holes up using strong rabbit wirenetting pieces. but still need to keep a look out for fresh holes any more suggestions??? tree

Posts: 2126 01/09/09 07:22 PM Moderator	There is a trap you can use..it's called a repeater trap. The mouse goes in and it pushes them to the back of the box trapping them inside. No harm to chickens or mouse, however if you leave the mouse in there a day or two, they do die.

Posts: 167 01/10/09 09:51 AM	If you want to give a try to a repellent, try Mouse Magic by Bonide. It's comprised of spearmint and peppermint, which mice apparently do not like to be around. Some folks use plain peppermint oil, soaking cotton balls with and putting it wherever mice are not welcome. I prefer repellent so that I don't harm unintended victims, which poison often does. Even if a mouse eats the poison if something then eats the mouse it can become ill or worse. I don't use the Bonide or peppermint oil very close to where my birds sleep in case the odor would bother them - I have no idea but just in case... JJ

The question I would have about soaking the holes with water is that we still several feet of snow around our yard and it freezes good at night. I would hate to puddle up water in the mud and have it turn to ice and not melt. And I've never seen ANY mouse droppings. I've only ever seen the holes. And they keep moving the holes. Every few days there is one more hole and it's in a new place. Is that common? Is it a girl mouse and she's just fussy or bored and rearranging? ;o) Oh, and thanks! Posts: 783 03/07/09 05:59 PM	someone suggested curry powder - cayeene - black pepper so i used them scattered around holes and inside too - since then i haven't seen any droppings inside chook coop. still pays to check as my dog sniffs around there - i guess they are back... so more peppers and water - exploring to find any more holes too rats are clever alright!!! tree
