I have 4 young silkies that I am still trying to decide what sex they are. I can't post pics right now cause I don't have my camera software installed
on my laptop, and my pc is out of commision till I move some chicks from my computer room. They were hatched out the later part of Feb. according to the lady I
got them from. Pics would sure help me alot. I have 3 blacks and 1 blue. Thanks in advance for any help.

Beck, it doesn't quite work that way. The peeps mature at such different rates that the pics I have of any peeps at that age I already know the sex of
because this pair's peeps show what they are so early.

Beck, I have a few with chicks and juveniles that I do know how it turned out.
This is a pullet but I was worried for quite a while about it being a boy due to the early red in the comb.
The one in the back turned out to be a boy I can;t remember for sure on the front one I think girl
This one turned out to be a girl and I gave her to Robin. Tom, Kentucky Silkies always told me to look at he comb, early on the male will have a wider comb the gals have a more slender comb. You can spot Wattles on the boys at around 3 months. If you compare them the boys will always have more prominent signs of wattles than the little girls. Some feel the top of the comb and find that the boys have a distinct bump. I am the worst at sexing Silkies early on, though I do find that around 3-4 months old it seems that it becomes pretty obvious in some. There are some that will surprise you. In my case those have all turned out to be girls. |

Thanks for the pics Jaynie. Such cute little ones. ITomorrow I will go out and give those combs a good look over. I did discover that one of the blacks is
really a dark blue. I am almost certain it is a girl (hope, hope, hope). I need to get my camera to work on my laptop to show you all some pics of them.
Just call me crazy (most people do), but I did the trick where you tie a needle to some thread and hold it over their back. If it goes in a circle its a girl and side to side a boy. That test says I have 3 girls and a boy. Time will tell. lol I tried it on some of the others and it was correct 100%. Hubby just sits and rolls his eyes at me. lol

They are all in the same position in the last 2 pics but I had to move the camera a little to get a better shot of the end ones.

I would say the blue one front and center is a girl. The one to the right of her may be a boy. If it's comb looks wider than the blue girl then it is most
likely a boy. You can start to look for hackle feathers to start developing and some streamers in the crest as well on the boys. Remember I am the worst person
at judging the sex of a Silkie. They sure are nice looking birds. I bet you will love having them. Just keep an eye out for poor eaters. Sometimes with the
large crests they don't see well and end up not moving about alot and can get pushed away from the feed bowl. I have one right now that I take and place
inside at the feed bowl when everyone else is outside so she can eat undisturbed. I am torn as to weather to clip that crest or not. She is so pretty and I may
go to a few shows in the fall. I usually end up clipping the bird rather than showing them. I think keeping them on wire is the best way to do with show birds
but I just like my flock outside eating grass and bugs. Have fun Beck and let us know what they turn out to be..

Thanks Jaynie. I hope the blue is a girl. So how soon should I hear crowing? They were hatched in late Feb. Are Silkies like most other breeds on how fast the
males mature? If so then I should be hearing crowing soon then I would think. I sure will let you know how they turn out.

Yes you should be hearing crowing soon. I have one that have been crowing for 4 weeks that hatched in Feb. I also have one I am still not sure of yet that was
hatched at the same time. You just never know by the crowing. The thing about most chickens is they will usually not crow if another guy has already declared
himself king of the coop. Once the original crower is removed another will step up to the plate. That makes it harder to tell on those slow bloomers.

about the silkie who can't see because of her 'hat' | #10 | ||

I have heard--if especially a show hen--to use a baby barrette or a tiny rubber band, since you won't want to cut her hair. If she's not showing now,
go ahead and give her top knot a trim. I had one like that and it helped her eat and have fun with the others.

Hey, my rooster is identical to the one in the middle. Looks like a lighter black and you can see his feet. Isn't that called a Frizzle Silkie? Or is there
another name?
Here's the pic I'm referring to: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v636/BeckT/007.jpg |

I think those in the pic are just Silkies, no frizzle to them.
