I have 14 hens from 6 months old to almost 2 years old, and 2 roosters. The hens are all duel purpose birds and the roos are a barred rock named Studly
Hungwell and a little silkie named Handsome Ron. I took the roosters in about 3 months ago and have not seen any "activity" between them and the hens
and have had no fertilized eggs yet. I really wanted to hatch some chicks so my kids could watch. Any ideas why nature has not taken its course yet?

Any clue how old the boys are? Sometimes, especially Silkies, the boys can be slow to mature. Also watch the girls' attitude towards them. If its one of
get the hell away from me that won't do much for the right mood either. Give them a little more time, things might suddenly change in the right direction.
You also said dual purpose. Does that mean these are large fowl hens? If it does then the Silkie boy's chance of breeding any of them is pretty slim. He just won't be big enough for a LF hen. |

LOL, That really is a name to live up to.
It does take awhile sometimes for everyone to settle in with a new rooster. 14 hens can be pretty intimidating, even for a stud muffin. You might try putting 2 or 3 hens along with the roo in a separate place to see how that dynamic work out. Don't count that little Silkie out. My Silkie Roo was on the large side but he mated with my RIR and I had very cute chicks for that cross. This is the Hen may give him something to think about if he gets to interested. |
