MY CHICKEN JUST FELL OVER |
Lead | ||
|
I just walked out to my chicken coop and my 6 month old Brahm is lying on the ground unable to stand. Her legs just dont work and she looks like she is dying.
I carried her to the inside part of the coop and she is just lying on her side unable to move. There has been no incident with her and her poop is normal and
she has been eating normally.
Saying that, in the last few weeks she has on occasion been a little clumsy. I hope somebody can help |

Has she been vaccinated for Mareks? Check her eyes, see if her legs are paralyzed. Give her a really good physical going over, look for anything abnormal. Any
odors?
How old are your other birds? Do you notice any difference in them? |

I dont know if she has been vaccinated - the lady i bought her from said she had all her shots etc - but you never know i guess. Her legs are paralyzed - no
odour or anything - her eyes are ok. my other birds are same age but seem fine.

There is a possibility of Mareks or botumlism. If you search the reference portion of this board you will find the treatment for botulism. If its Mareks all
you can do is support her and hope that all of the others will be OK. I'm leaning towards botulism since you haven't seen any of the others with
symptoms.
It would be a good idea if you think its botulism to try and find the source. Old feed left on the ground is a good source or something that died and she ate. You will probably have to make a nest for her so that she's upright and not on her side. She'll need to be repositioned from time to time to prevent sores. Most of the time they recover from this. |

A little update on Velta: It has now been 72 hours and she is doing a little better. It goes up and down all day but her worst today is like her best 2 days

Wow - what a testament to their incredible ability to persevere. I am sooo glad she is improving. Your love and TLC is the best medicine. You are probably
already making her food and water easy to access. Maybe some extra good nutrition right now will help bolster her, e.g. a bit of Avia Charge 2000 in her water
daily, a few good treats like sunflower seeds - whatever she really likes - to bolster her spirits. Sending good wishes. JJ

Well, I could have sworn I posted that you should start making sure she's getting some of her regular feed so she's getting the vitamins and minerals
she needs. Don't know what happened there.
Glad to hear she is doing better. |
