I have a cross breed chick that is approximatly 10 weeks old, he started limping about 4 weeks ago so seperated him in an isolation pen. But then about 2
weeks later both of his legs became paralyzed. I thought that he had mareks so I put him in my brooder bin with plenty of food, water and tomatoes and he has
still survived. I think his legs have gotten a little better but his feet are still paralyzed and now his head is always turned to the side.
Does anyone know what I can do for him next?

If you haven't been doing it give the peep Polyvisol vitamins without iron, a couple of drops at the end of its beak one a day. You can also give it B
complex injections but you will need a 1 cc syring with a tiny needle, an insulin syringe would work well. Give it just a couple of drops under the skin. That
will help provide energy and stimulate appetite.

Get some vitamin E into him by taken a liquid tab and mixing it with plain active culture yogurt mixed with some rolled oat. Feed him this twice a day. Use
1/2 a tab each time. Do this for a week to see how he does. This sounds more like he had botulsim more than mareks but it could be either.

It does sound more like Botulism now that you mention it. The chick looks worse today, his legs sort of jut out in front of him so he can't sit very well. I made him a hammock with leg holes for him to sit in, and that seems to help. Unfortunately we don't have any of the right vitamins but hopefully we can get them today. I fed him some yogurt with grains mixed in anyway and he really liked it, hopefully that'll help keep him hydrated too. -Pearl |
