Posts: 179 01/23/08 01:30 AM	I bought a english lop doe at a small stock show on saturday. I noticed saturday afternoon she had an abcess (my fault for not checking her before I bought her ). I talked to the person I bought her from Sunday and she offered to take bunny back and give me my money back....But I just couldn't give her back- english lops are so hard to find. She said just use an injectable- L.A 200. Someone experienced in rabbits lanced it for me yesterday, and it doesn't feel "hot" anymore. They also applied iodine to the site. I don't have any iodine, but my dad went to the feedstore and brought home some povidone iodine wash- it says for use it precleansing and post cleansing a bacterial/fungal infection area in animals. Will that work? Should I dilute it? The person who lanced the abcess said to take pure iodine and water it down 'till it looked like iced tea. What about this stuff? Should I just dab some of it on her abcess each day? She's in a cage in my room separate from my other bunnies- just in case it might be contagious. Are abcesses usually contagious to people other animals and bunnies? Should I lance the abcess again? What are the chances that the abcess will reoccur? The abcess is on her leg- her lower thigh. Please, if one of your bunnies has had an abcess, how did you treat it, did it recover or reoccur, and any advice, tips or suggestions please! Thanks! P.S- Today she's favoring that leg

Posts: 35 01/24/08 10:53 AM	You should have given the rabbit back, quite frankly I wouldn't keep her. Abcesses in rabbits are most often caused by Pastuerella Multocida, its a virulent bacteria thats there's no cure for. Most likely your rabbit is a carrier and could with time infect your other rabbits. There are different strains of Pastuerella, some are quite nasty and will kill, others aren't as unpleasant and just cause problems over the life of the rabbit. Its a losing situation, if she infects your other rabbits you really lose out. http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?cls=18&cat=1803&articleid=2686 Treating abcesses in rabbits isn't easy, because they lack the chemical that makes the exudate(pus) fluid, and instead its thick like toothpaste and will not drain on its own. Often the abcess has been encapsulated by the body, meaning that a membrane or scar tissue of sorts has been formed around the abcess, and so when vets remove abcesses from rabbits they remove this as well, and scrape/clean it very well before closing it. If this isn't done often the abcess returns. You can try to treat it yourself but it may come back. You have to drain and clean it, and keep squeezing the pus out, may take a while. I still have to suggest returning her, its not worth risking your other rabbits.

Posts: 50 01/24/08 11:52 AM	I've treated encapsulated abcesses in goats by injecting about 1cc of formalin (formaldehyde) directly into the abcess. It's best to do this before lancing the abcess to avoid exposure of yourself and the others with the pus. You may want to try this if you have a hard time getting the thing to go away or if another shows up. The key is that you are not injecting the formalin into the rabbit but, rather, into the abcess. The scar tissue around the abcess prevents the formalin from getting into the rabbit and you basically end up embalming the abcess. It works really well in goats and is one of the more accepted methods of treating abcesses in goats. I would definately use it on my rabbits if one had an abcess. Posts: 398 01/29/08 10:20 AM	I agree with Bramblerose, Return the rabbit, if it is pasturella, it may manifest as an abcess in this bunny but in yours it may manifest differently. And if it is pasturella, your rabbits will get it. Pasturella can be carried on your hands, your clothes and when a rabbit sneezes, it can travel up to 6 feet away. See many things that are treatable in other animals cannot be successfully treated in rabbits, simply because they do not have the physiology to handle. I dont' want to make it sound as if rabbits are disposable, but when it comes to diseases, it ain't worth the risk of your other rabbits. I have had friends that have had HUGE rabbitries of 100 or more rabbits, lose all of them to Pasturella. All because their rabbit was on the same show table as a rabbit that had it. Blessings angora

Posts: 177 02/01/08 10:36 AM	I can't just give the rabbit back. The breeder lives over 90 miles away. I took her to the vet last friday and he found several tracts and pockets leading off the original abcess. He shaved the area and tried to cut off the affected tissue. He prescribed baytril. I give her 1/4 tablet twice a day. I'm going to ask the vet how much it would cost to culture the abcess for pastuerella- just to be sure. But so far, it's healing (knock on wood)

Posts: 38 02/01/08 05:08 PM	Baytril is normally whats used for Pastuerella, many other problems are treatable with a penicillin shot. Why don't you ask your vet if he thinks its pasteurella before doing the culture, also realize that you could spend a lot treating this doe, and still have a problem. That money could be better spent buying a healthy doe. Only you can decide whats best for you, but if you do test her for pasteurella and she's positive what then? I'd contact the breeder, tell her whats happening, and how much its costing you, perhaps she will refund the purchase price. Good Luck.

Posts: 178 02/19/08 06:30 PM	Bramblerose, thanks for the advice. Thankfully, even after finishing her antibiotic two weeks ago, bunny is healing (knock on wood). The vet said if it was pasteurella it would try to come back after she went off her meds. So, far it hasn't tried to come back (knock on wood). I put her in with the other rabbits today, and am hoping for the best.

Posts: 1 06/08/09 05:49 AM	Help Help My dwarf rabbit it 8 years old and last September he got this lump under he's chin removed by the Vet...they told me it was pasturella so after bringing him home I treated him with antibiotics and BenPack warm compresses..the lump is back and bigger than ever...can the Vet drain the abcess without putting him under or maybe just a little tranquilzer Thanks
