My rabbit Brownie has passed away... |

If you all remembered my last topics on how i was going to breed my rabbit brownie with my male boo boo, well i bred them. She was due to have them on saturday , July 14. I stuck a nest in her pen days before she was going to deliver. On Saturday was an exciting day. I couldn't wait until she had the babies. Yet I was wondering why she never made a nest. She hadn't pulled hair or anything. At night time me and my family had wondered why she hadn't delivered them. We were then worried. Something was wrong. My mom researched and found that they can have the babies between day 28-35. Then I was calmer. She might have her babies between Saturday until Thursday. She also read if they she don't have her babies by day 35, we should take her to the vet. Monday she started making a nest. No hair pulled yet though. Later that day we went out and came back and she pulled hair! We were so happy that she might deliver today. In the morning she still didn't deliver. So we called the the vet that mom takes our dog too. They have no rabbit vet's there so they gave us a phone number. We called him and he said bring her on down and we will take a look at her. So we brought her down immediately. He was feeling her stomach just to make sure there was babies. He then asked us if there was any contractions. So we told him she was bleeding. He nodded and said "call me at 4. I'm going to give her contraction medicine to make her contract harder.I also feel a baby in her. I think the babies are stuck, so I will have to put her to sleep to get the one baby out of her. We could also do C-section but that is costly and risky, rabbits usually never get through it." So mom looked at me and I said "No we wont do C-section. " So we left.We called back and he said he got 2 babies out of her and he wanted to keep her a little longer. By seven he couldn't get any more out but he thinks there are 2 more, so we went down to get her. He said we should call in the morning to see if she had them, and how she was. Basically that's it. In the morning I came out and she passed away. I don't understand what went wrong. If any of you have ideas please help me understand.

How old was she? Rabbits past a certain age cannot pass babies through their pelvises because they fuse after 1 year to 18 months. I'm sorry for your loss.

I have never heard of a rabbit's pelvis fusing before, only guinea pig's, and that is a totally incorrect statement for gp's, so it would most likely apply to rabbits also. The pelvis DOES NOT fuse, but the ligaments get less elastic so therefore it makes it more difficult to give birth.
Whenever we breed our animals, there is always a chance things will go wrong. I am sorry for the loss of Brownie. Did the vet say anything, like she had pregnancy toxemia? Were the babies alive that he got out? I would guess that if the babies were already dead, then that is why the mom died. The dead babies poisoned her system. |

I never knew that if they died in her it could poison her system. I never new it could even infect her or anything. Do you have any ideas why the babies died?

First I'm so sorry that you lost Brownie, I feel so bad for you, thats a hard thing to have to go thru with a pet. Sorry sweetie.
As for the cause, well first its uncommon for rabbits to have pregnancy complications, and no, their pelvises do not fuse, the bones do harden though and sometimes if their bred later in life they can have a harder time of it, I've had babies born with bruised heads from an older mother. Rabbits however are sensitive to anesthesia, every time their put under its a risk, and they also can suffer badly from stress and go into shock. Rabbits can also be literally frightened to death, their quite fragile, and it could be a mix of problems that caused her to pass away. When rabbits kindle they usually have all of the babies quickly, one after the other, and sometimes a first time doe won't make a nest until afterwards because it happens so quickly. Other does can pull fur days or even a week in advance, most wait till right before. When a kit dies inside the mother it can be expelled or retained, and its not uncommon for rabbits to keep mummified kits inside them with no ill effects for quite some time, unlike dogs or goats that will become toxic and get quite ill. She could have been poisoned by a kit that died and it caused her to have uterine inertia(meaning she couldn't push the rest of the babies out) but thats not a common rabbit problem. I think if you want a better understanding you will have to talk to the vet who worked on her, I can come up with what may have happened, and tell you what I know is common and uncommon with rabbits, but only he can tell you for sure. I'm really sorry that you lost her. I wish I could be more help, I only have a few Mini Rex left these days, but if you decide that you'd like to get another doe sometime your mom knows who I am, I'd be happy to give you another when I have a litter. |

Sorry for my mistake. That is just what i've always heard. It is usually best to breed before nine months because the pelvis is more flexible and they have an easier time. A friends doe had the same problem and she was bred at about 1 1/2 years. My friend had to pull the baby out and it died. The next day she had a couple of live babies.
